There are many tricky words in the English language. Words that you cannot sound out or spell using regular spelling rules are known as sight words or heart words and are taught beginning in preschool. Kids are encouraged to learn these words by sight, rather than learning to sound them out, to improve their reading fluency and speed. Sight words are often high frequency words, meaning that they appear often in books, stories, and general written text. Some examples of Kindergarten sight words are do, please, pretty, and who.

I use several different sight word printables to teach sight words, including sight word flashcards. These large heart word flash cards are easy to pin to a word wall or bulletin board and have nine printable options. I print the new sight words we are learning in color to match our seasonal word wall and print the sight words that we have already mastered in black.

Since these sight word flashcards are large, they can easily be printed two pages per sheet to save ink and paper and create small flash cards. The smaller size works great for sight word games and to make word rings. They can also be used for literacy centers and write the room activities.

These sight word flashcards have a sight word list for each grade level which is helpful for assessment.

Happy sight word reading!
